MN Orchestra

Artistic Stuff & Inspiration & Music

This is my review and opinion of the MN orchestra’s October 24th Program. It is as follows:

  • Concerto No. 1 (Naughty Limericks) – Robert Shchedrin
  • Sinfonia Concertante in E-flat major for Oboe, Clarinet, Bassoon, Horn and Orchestra – Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
    • Allegro
    • Adagio
    • Andantino con variazioni
  • Quiet City – Aaron Copland
  • Concerto for Orchestra – Witold Lutoslawski
    • Intrada
    • Capriccio notturno e arioso
    • Passacaglia, toccata e corale

Orchestra Hall was fun, if you look at some of the pictures of orchestra hall on mnorchestra.org you can see the cubes on the ceiling – those got very distracting. The MN Orchestra had an amazing program. The only song I felt remotely bored during was the Mozart, but that was 32 minutes long and I’ve heard it a billion times before, so that’s probably why.

The first song they played was Concerto No.1 (Naughty Limericks) by Robert Shchedrin, what I really enjoyed about this piece was that it was very contemporary and it had an amazing flute soli part with a string counter melody. Next they played a Mozart piece that had 3 parts, and inbetween parts I always started laughing because everyone would suddenly start coughing (call me immature, but I thought it was funny). Next they played a gorgeous piece by Aaron Copland, Quiet City, it was so beautiful that I’m going to go buy it off of Itunes. Quiet City featured a trumpet and English Horn (one of my favorite instruments, the sound is so mysterious). The orchestra finished their concert with a dynamic piece by Witold Lutoslawski, simply called ‘Concerto for Orchestra’. This piece was amazing and super contemporary and unlike anything I’ve ever heard before. Oh, during the Mozart, the clarinet soloist was so funny to watch!! First, he slouched! With his feet crossed, but somehow he was still amazing. He also had very ‘jerky’ movements and when he finished his solos he’d slap his hand down on his leg.

Overall, I enjoyed the Orchestras concert, and our school’s pre-concert went better than I expected.
